LAKE EYRE’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH LA NINA
In early 2009 the heavens opened up out west and sent a deluge of water towards Lake Eyre. This was the season change that broke the 10 year drought which had western QLD almost on its knees. The rain continued through the summers of 2010, 2011 and now 2012. Water has flowed into Lake Eyre and provided a fantastic opportunity for people to witness this exciting event in the middle of Australia. However according to a report in the recent Weekend Australian the La Nina weather pattern which has caused all the rain over the last 4 years is about the come to an end.
What this means is that this year could be the last chance for many people to see Lake Eyre with plenty of water in it.
Travel West owners Graham & Debbie Reid will again offer flights to Lake Eyre in a day from Brisbane. Graham's passion for the western river systems is brought to life as you travel half way across the continent. "We have been travelling out here for the last 15 years and there is so much to show people, I love it" said Graham.
Our first flight is on Saturday 14 April, we fly in a Dash 8 which has 36 seats. Spend the day covering about 4,000 kilometres and seeing most of the western river systems including the 5 Lake Eyre catchment areas that occupy 1/6th of the continent.
A bonus on this great day out is a chance to enjoy a cold drink at the famous Birdsville Hotel.
